Our Practice

The Auckland Animal Eye Centre is a solely referral veterinary ophthalmic service, offering specialist eye care for all animals, we are based in Mt. Wellington, Auckland, with regular clinics being run in Hamilton at The Pet Practice, corner of Mill and Tristram Streets.

Horses are frequently examined and treated in excellent, purpose built equine facilities in Takanini.



We are a small friendly team providing a specialist ophthalmic referral service. Working closely with your veterinarian we can achieve the best possible care for your pet’s eyes.

Our full surgical and medical facility offers: Breeding certificates – Australian and New Zealand schemes, cataract surgery, electrodiagnostic testing, cryosurgery, glaucoma therapy, corneal grafting, tumour and trauma reconstructive surgery and more.

We also provide continuing education, for veterinarians and veterinary students nation wide. Our service offers information and full support for both large and small animal veterinarians.

Several non profit organisations utilise our services, these include; The Auckland Zoo, Guide Dog Services, Kelly Tarltons, New Zealand Customs and The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Our mission




To provide a leading state of the art veterinary eye care service in a friendly, relaxed environment. To maintain excellent staff, equipment and communication with owners and referring veterinarians, and to achieve the best possible outcome for your pet’s eyes.

We will continue to provide education and support for veterinarians and veterinary
students’ nation wide.



Our team

Peter Collinson: BVSc, MVS, FACVSc Veterinary ophthalmologist

Peter completed his undergraduate veterinary degree from Massey University in 1986. He then started a surgical residency at the University of Melbourne in 1989, changing to ophthalmology 18 months later. His ophthalmology residency included externships to Colorado State University, The University of North Carolina and The University of Queensland. He passed his masters degree in 1991 and fellowship in 1993, subsequently gaining specialist registration in both Australia and New Zealand.


Peter left his position as staff ophthalmologist at Melbourne University to start the Auckland Animal Eye Centre in late 1994. With his partner Michelle, the centre grew to become a full time solely referral specialist service, based in Mt Wellington in early 1997.
